I threw a Cul-de-sac Party

I have been thinking we should have a block party since we moved here. I thought someone who had been here longer than us would take charge. Nope. This is our fifth summer and there have been no gatherings. I decided earlier this year that I was going to take charge. National Night Out is a thing – always the first Tuesday of August.

On Saturday, it occurred to me that August was very soon. I decided it was not too late to have a block party. I decided I would just throw a party and invite people. Then I took a nap. And on Sunday when I should have been doing something about invitations, I took another nap. On Monday morning, I decided it still wasn’t too late – but it was going to be terribly hot (AND I AM TIRED OF HOT) on Tuesday, so I decided my party was going to be on Wednesday.

My invitation said we would bring pulled pork, buns, chips, cupcakes, plates, silverware, and napkins. Bringing something was optional, but just coming was the important part. I put it on all 8 of the other houses in the cul-de-sac. We got everything outside by 5:30 and really, really, really hoped someone would come out.

The picture of the day was as we were alone, waiting. I thought maybe no one would come, so I ate a cupcake. (oh. I just looked at the picture. You can’t see the cupcakes, but they are there.)

And then people came! Only four of the nine houses came, but it was a complete win. They were all really nice and we enjoyed visiting with them. We stayed out until 8:30, when it started to get buggy and dark. Two of the houses are out of town, and two let us know they had other obligations. We actually know all of those people, so we got all of the new people. Yay!

  1. What a success. Love a gathering where you can meet up and just chat. Well done.

Congratulations!!! I think you can see the tops of the cupcakes behind the napkins and barbecue sauce. What kind were they? Your neighbors are lucky to have you.
