The Drowsy Chaperone

For the second night in a row, we were pleasantly surprised how good the show we saw was. That sounds like we have bad attitudes (baditudes), but that is not the case. Both nights the shows were so interesting and creative we had no idea what we were in for and they were such complete and wonderful surprises. We went to the Phipps (having rescheduled last week after we tried to sleep through it) to see the Drowsy Chaperone. We knew nothing about the show again tonight. We didn’t expect a hilarious narrator to keep stopping the show with his asides; we didn’t expect people to come out of the refrigerator; we didn’t expect so many terrific singers to be in the cast; I didn’t expect that Adolfo would be my favorite!

We both took SHORT naps after work today to be NOT drowsy during the show. I like when I can sub for a whole week for someone, it really helps to get to know the kids and figure out what I am doing! Part of my job this week was to be outside before school helping to monitor kids as they arrived early. Yesterday, a little girl was sternly talking about her breakfast – to absolutely no one. She was marching toward the school, just talking away about her breakfast, which apparently had NOT lived up to her expectations. As she walked through the door, the last thing we heard was “Don’t eat Murphy’s doughnut, at least if it is NOT WARMED UP!” The music teacher and I discussed what kind of doughnuts might be better warmed up – agreeing that filled doughnuts would NOT be improved with heat. She told me there would be doughnuts in the lounge Friday morning and I should get one and warm it up. There are microwaves available. Today, she reminded me about the doughnuts, and the potential to warm one up.

I hesitantly went to the lounge, because I am never sure if a sub should partake in treats…but a doughnut sounded so good. I looked at them and decided I would choose a plain raised glazed and I would warm it up – a little imitation of a Krispie Kreme when the HOT light is on. I picked up my doughnut and started across the room to the microwave. I took a quite tasting bite, because doughnut.

By the time I got to the microwave, all I had left was one little bite. I considered heating it, decided YES, then popped it in my mouth without pause. Restraint is not my forte.

I went into the music room, because it was is on my way to the library. I don’t even know the music teacher’s name (but I do know that 78 kids have signed up for before-school choir!), but I needed to tell her I didn’t manage the heating of the doughnut. She very seriously looked at me and said, “Try again! Go right back there and try again!”

Then we both broke out laughing.

In a week, you can figure out some things about the group you are teaching, and you can make a new teacher friend.

  1. Oh, yum! Glazed doughnut, 10 seconds or so on high–just enough to soften the glaze a little. I highly recommend it, especially if the doughnuts have been sitting out for a while.
