Recovery

We went to bed last night after our tv watching. I had to crawl up the last few steps because my ankle was hurting. I hopped to the bed, threw my clothes on the floor, got into jammies, and snuggled in. Keith was messing around with his CPAP machine, putting on new parts (as is appropriate now and then). We turned off the light (clap clap) and lay next to each other silently.

Then I said, “I need a box.”
That was greeted with silence. Keith’s ability to fall asleep in under 15 seconds is legendary in our household. When the boys were medium sized, they used to follow him to bed and count out loud to see how many seconds it would take. He would mumble, “That is not helping,” but still fall asleep before they got to 20. After a few more seconds of silence, I was completely surprised when he responded, “I can’t figure out why you need a box.”
“The covers are too heavy on my foot. It’s hurting. I want to put my foot in a box.”
“Oh. That makes sense. I have a box that is just right.”
Clap clap. He leaned over the side of the bed and retrieved a perfect box – bigger than my foot, but not very deep. (It was from the new CPAP parts he had just used). That makes it seem like we don’t always have a box just..right.. there..which would not be true. Pencils, pens, and boxes can usually just be reached from wherever you need one.” I tried to wrestle in under the covers, but to be honest, my whole self just hurt. I was shaken or stirred or something. Keith unplugged and came around to get the box under the covers.

It was perfect. My foot felt immediately better without heavy covers (heavy covers are required for sleeping, so removing them was not an option). I slept until 4:30, when it was time to visit the bathroom.

OHMYGOD my ankle hurt. At first I could not go. It really, really hurt. I hobbled and hopped and held onto the everything within reach and I made it. Barely. The trip back wasn’t bad at all. Apparently, my ankle didn’t like sleeping. It was a repeat in the morning. OW OW OW, then gradually better. All the other body aches subsided during the night. Yay.

After a trip to Jean’s backyard for the last gathering of the year (with treats! SO MANY TREATS!), I sat with my foot up most of the day. It is way way way better and I assume tomorrow I will be completely healed.
