A Day at Sea

Friday, November 8, 2024

We slept way in after being up very, very late last night. We set our clocks forward an hour today, which kept surprising me all day – the opposite of best-day-of-year. My phone didn’t switch times, so I repeated was off an hour. Getting up at almost 10, then napping didn’t help. We are now 8 hours ahead of home.

We played trivia with the same Canadians from yesterday. We only got 12, but winners were 14, so… There were several unfavorable questions (In the Harry Potter movie, how many staircases were there in Hogwarts? What? 142), so it wasn’t as fun. Our Brit/Aussie dad/son were back for afternoon trivia and we had a much better time – but still one off the money. Which slipper did Cinderella lose? Left or right?

The weather was grey and windy and not much fun for being out on deck. We watched the movie The Duke (Jim Broadbent about a painting heist in 1961) in our room in the afternoon. I plunked off 20 minutes in, because I had been awake for hours.

We went to the Captain’s Circle cocktail party at 5pm. We got a card inviting us. We arrived about 10 minutes late, because we forgot about it. We sat with a nice couple in the only seats left in the room. We got a rum punch, cruise people drew 3 names to win bottles of champagne, then they asked us to leave because there was another activity in that room soon. It was moderately hilarious. We went back to the room, changed back into grubby clothes, and watched the rest of the movie.

At dinner, we were next to some people talking about the election. They were “overjoyed” with the result, so I asked why. Well, they were glad the Dems hadn’t cheated this time – it was a completely clean election. They did admit that if Trump hadn’t won, it would have been because of fraud. They are glad grocery prices (and all prices) are going to go down in January. They are very upset that transgender people can compete in sports and Trump will take care of that. Biden is banning gas vehicles and gas stoves – and they have an electric stove, but still, that is not fair. Illegal immigrants are forming gangs (there are over 40,000 illegal immigrants in the Denver area that are all in the gangs) and robbing and breaking into people houses, even in the nicer suburbs. Trump will wall them off and keep America safe. They had more money when he was president. Trump has never lied, and the country was never better than when he was president.

I listened politely and asked a few questions. They eventually asked where I was from and they were shocked to hear Minnesota. They mentioned how bad Minneapolis was after it was burned down from George Floyd. We assured them that it had not burned down – several buildings had (too many buildings) – but the city as a whole was fine. They said that wasn’t what they knew from what they saw on TV. We went back and forth a bit, then we gave up and let them continue to think Minneapolis has all burned down.

When they started talking about how Kamala (pronounced wrong) insulted Trump and said terrible things, while he did nothing like that, I got up and said I was happy to have heard their reasons for voting, but I would not listen to that. She called out – “He said she was a pretty woman, that is a compliment. He didn’t say she was a Nazi.” Of course, I had to say, “I thought it was a fascist.” Of course, this lady does not think he is a fascist, he is the biggest promoter of democracy ever.

Oh, heaviest sigh.

We went to the show “On the Bayou” tonight. So much more enjoyable than Disco – because I liked the music and the costumes so much more. The singers and dancers are talented either way. The band was pretending to play Saints Go Marching In – complete with a killer clarinet part, but no clarinet in the band. They had a Sousaphone with the bass player holding his fist up to his mouth pretending to play – even though the horn had no lead pipe. It was pretty cute.

Here is some random fruit/veg art we wandered past at one point in the afternoon. 🙂

The view from our window today:

It is the darkest of dark out there now.
