A Fine Day

I did not have to work today! Very exciting.

We got a text from Sean saying, “This was so cute!” I was intrigued. Then the story followed. A kid knocked on their door a few minutes after 8am and said, “The bus just went right past me. Will you take me to school?” She said she has waved at the bus stop before, but that is the entire history of any relationship. Then she really made the story good. It was actually Benjamin who answered the door and Benjamin who took the kid to school. He said he learned where Middleton High School is. 🙂

I give the kid total props for actually going to school and not using the bus as an excuse to just stay home. I give him all the credit in the world for asking for help. It makes me feel so happy that someone could ask for help and get it. It’s not the way the world works most of the time and I was so glad it did today. Good job, Benjamin! Thanks for sharing, Sean!

I went to my friend, Jean’s, backyard today – first time for the season. It was from 10-noon and I was only a few minutes late (I was out watering the new plants and time got away). There were only 6 of us and I was SO GLAD to see my friend who has had cancer – he was looking SO much better than in the fall. He reported that all is stable and he is feeling good about things. The group kept getting bigger and bigger. The people are from all the avenues of Jean’s life and it is such a delight to be able to get to know new people and hear about what they are doing and thinking. Jean asked everyone to share what they had planned for June. I got to tell them that we are finally taking the cruise to Alaska that Keith won on Jeopardy. Everyone was very excited that we had won. I told them that when I first heard about it, I thought we should definitely get younger and fitter before we went on this adventure. Now we are going in ten days, and I have done absolutely nothing about getting younger and fitter. Darn! I have been so busy! Things get away from me. But I still have ten days. You never know.

Keith played a big band concert at a high school. Their jazz band and combos played and they were good (but combos where everyone has to play a solo are boring. It’s educational. They are learning. That is so good. The audience was so appreciative and those kids are greatly supportive, but, still, a bit boring.) (I’m mean. Sorry.) The high school jazz band and After Hours Big Band combined to play one tune together at the end. Keith was standing next to the kid lead player, sharing his music, and when Keith took something up an octave the kid’s head swiveled to the right and he started laughing. Keith looked at him and they both laughed. At one point, there is a long held high note for them and I heard it – the kid was really holding his own – until Keith popped that one up an octave. You can’t play the trumpet if you are laughing. I laughed too.

The concert was in a very nice area of Minneapolis, and I like looking at the McMansions that have been squeezed into tiny lots. I know they are ruining the charm of the neighborhood and all, but, man, there are some cool houses.
