We were right back to the same theater tonight as we were in last night. It’s fun to order season tickets and not know what the shows are going to be. This one was a comedy written in 1746 for a famous Harlequinn of the day. It started with an actor breaking the 4th wall and talking to us, in character as a player in the troupe, but also as a person from 2024 (?). He told us some (funny) things and said the troupe was on its way to do the play A Servant of Two Masters. They arrived and the show started. I was curious what was happening. I thought it must be a farce or satire using olden days, but then…it seemed like it was really just a play from the days of yore. It was definitely ala 1746 and yet so funny and seemingly up-to-date? I enjoyed it thoroughly, but still don’t know if it was updated (because was it? I don’t know. I cannot explain that – how can I not know? I was there) or was it as written?
The band was fantastic. They did sound effects (usually amusingly late) as well as played instruments. There were a large variety of percussion toys, as well a bassoon-playing accordionist, a trumpeter, and tuba player. Kudos guys – well done.
I laughed a lot (but NOWHERE as much as the people behind us did. They were hysterical. Were they drunk? Were their friends in the show? I don’t know, but they really had fun) and I enjoyed it, so that is all that matters.
