Can’t Buy Me Love

It wasn’t the best part of the concert (we’ll get to that), but it’s the song that is going and going in my head (it was definitely good). After Hours Big Band had a concert in Spring Lake Park tonight. They played a Christmas concert on their series last year and did a regular concert tonight. They brough Reed Grimm back to sing with them and he is absolutely fantastic. He sang 5 tunes and each was stellar. My favorite (and what I thought would be the best tune of the night) was Just a Gigolo. He is a really good showman and everyone was loving it.

My favorite tune of the night was a saxophone feature. What? What am I saying? Saxophone. Huuuuuuh. Joe Coughlin, lead tenor, just blew me away. I don’t even know the name of the tune! It was new music to me. I rarely love new music, because it takes me awhile to work into things. It started with just Joe, improvising (he played a quote from Tequila, then played the whole line and the audience sang out Tequila! I did not see that coming). [The tune was called Hoping For the Best — Keith]

Let’s recap: Saxophone, new music, improvised solo. None of this is my favorite, but this tune was amazing. I leapt to my feet when they finished (I am NOT an obligatory ovator. You gotta really impress me to get me out of my seat) and it wasn’t even the end of the concert.

Keith played, too, and he was as good as always. I’m not taking him for granted (much) but I had Reed and Joe and the new bass player (who was cute and had an upright bass and was totally fun to watch) to pay attention to. Such a busy concert.

Keith has a bad toothache. I am glad his tooth didn’t vibrate him into collapse.

And I got all better today from having my shot. Yay.
