My brother, David, invited us all to come to his house for a viewing of the movie Dare To Dream: the Alan Kulwicki Story. The movie came out in 2005 and told the story of car racer Alan Kulwicki. Kulwicki was a native of Milwaukee, and the movie was filmed around Milwaukee. It also co-starred our brother-in-law, Thomas Schunk. David, our mom, Donna, Michael, and Thom all attended the premier. Nancy (and Thom) lived in New York at the time, and Nancy didn’t come back for the premier. Thom told her later that she could never see the movie, because it was so bad. She never saw it until tonight. David thought it was the worst movie he had ever seen when he first saw it.
Thom passed away suddenly in 2017. Nancy purchased a copy of the movie, but never watched it. Tonight, we all gathered and enjoyed it together. Enjoy it we did. We CHEERED when Thom came on for the first time. What fun it was to see him as we had never seen him! His character did not wear glasses, so he was acting blind. The low budget film had him wearing his own clothes, so he looked like him (except for no glasses). He did a fine job – some of his scenes were …odd…and quite hilarious, but he did fine as an actor. I so enjoyed seeing him. It was a really bad movie – but I learned all about Alan Kulwicki – and we laughed a lot.
Although that was the high point, the day started out with the magnificent fact that I transported leftover bagels to Waukesha yesterday, so there were bagels!! I love bagels so much. Having them already in your house is a treat of treats. Nancy bought me tiny Cokes, so I had a bagel and tiny Coke (in a tiny Holiday glass) (it’s pretty much the only glass I drink out of when I am in this-used-to-be-my-mom’s-house house) for breakfast. The whole thing was topped off perfectly when she brought me a tiny butter knife from childhood to butter my bagel (decision is firm. Cream cheese is really good, but I gotta go butter on a bagel). I wish everyone could have as nice of a breakfast as I had today.
Nancy tended her lovely garden, while I sat and talked to her. Delightful.
Nancy and I went to Kopp’s for a (shared) burger (they are too big for one, if you still want to eat custard) and custard. Happy National Frozen Custard day! We had no idea until we were there. I picked today, because one of the daily flavors was Butter Almond (the other was Grasshopper Fudge). It was DELICIOUS. We had this terrific conversation after we finished our burger. “Do you want both flavors?” “Yes.” “If we go two scoops, which would go on top?” “Have to be mint, because otherwise we will forget the almond by the time we are done. I think it will be more subtle.” “I’m thinking two cones. Do the almond, then follow with mint. Or mint and almond, depending on how much I like it.” “One scoop or two to start?” “Probably one. But then, possibly two for the second cone.” “Deal.”
It doesn’t matter who said what. There was lengthy planning. Then I went and got the cones, a double scoop of almond for me and a single for Nancy. The almond was so good, no way was I having mint after that. She went back for a single almond, but I held with two scoops. It was delicious, but I decided not to try to explode. I regret that now.
We went for a walk at Frame Park flower garden afterwards. Beautiful. Then we made popcorn and headed to David’s for the movie. What a terrific day.
Family, beautiful gardens, and frozen custard–and bagels! What a day! Thanks for the gorgeous flower photos. 🙂
Thanks for reading along!
