Keith and I have watched Halloween competition shows in years past – cake makers and chocolateers and punkin carvers create amazing tableaus in 6 or 7 minutes (oh, hours..). Impressed with the punkin carvers, and knowing Keith has been an expert punkin carver since long before everyone had cool tools and premade patterns, I thought he would enjoy getting to try 3D carving tools and giving it a try himself.
He was intimidated to try on our actual Halloween punkins, because he had no idea how it would turn out and he didn’t want to not have punkins. That made sense. I was going to go out and buy extra punkins, but he said he was just going to use the back of ours the next day.
Today is the next day!
The guys on TV grab the bigger roundy-ist tool and just shave off the outer layer flip flip flip. In reality, it was gouge, scrape, ack, scrape, huh. He ended up using a butcher knife to sort of filet away the orange rind. After that, the game was to remove whatever he didn’t want…
It didn’t take him long at all to make his first carving. I think it is a great success!
It was a lot of fun and I’m definitely going to do this again in the future. Well, I’ll do some more practicing over the next couple days on the remaining space on our pumpkins from Halloween night. Next year I’ll have to plan some extra time to come up with good designs and a lot more time for the carving itself.
I chose a skull as my first attempt because it didn’t have a protruding nose to figure out. Maybe the next one will be Voldemort. 😊
Fantastic work Keith. Difficult to believe it was your 1st attempt! Well done. 🙂
Thanks, Sheila. It definitely turned out better than I expected it would.
Tom and I agree with you – a great success.
Very impressive! Skullduggery, you might say. Or not.
Stunning work – a real artist’s eye! Confession – I groaned at Barbara’s comment, too….
