Keith and I spent a lot of time in the lobby of the Fine Arts building at UWEC when we were in school. Chamber orchestra rehearsal was here tonight. We didn’t have time to stop at the hotel before rehearsal, so he went into the concert hall and I headed to the lobby.
BAM! The furniture is different. It’s been almost 40 years, so I guess it’s reasonable, but…but… I think it was the same when Alexander went to school here as when we did. If it was good enough to last from (before) 1981 until 2014, why did they have to change it?
The new furniture is dumb and not comfy (even if I did fall asleep…but only for a few minutes).
We’ve seen this change at least twice – once last December and again during the recent celebration. Not close to as nice as the old stuff – but the old stuff really was getting ratty. I would have been happy with just new cushions. The color doesn’t match anything… The good news? Living in Michigan, I don’t have to see this every day any more!!! Note that the table on the far right side of the picture is one of the same tables that has been there forever (generally stored under the stairs).
I wondered if the goal was to make it not an easy place to hang out. If so, they succeeded. After it being the centerpiece of my college existence, it is sad to think of the current students missing out. But then I think they would not be visiting with others waiting for symphony band to start, they would be on their devices – working or recreating. Times have changed and we must let them.
