Foooood

I cooked!

First, we shopped. We bought all the food. We planned meals, we made a list, and we bought so many things. The cashier did not look particularly astounded by our quantity of foods (I was), but I said we’ve been gone for over a month (not exactly true, but I was gone all of January before we left for Wales, so it seems like we have been gone longer than a month.) He was intrigued with that and asked where we’d been. I said Wales. He said That must have been so cool (he sounded sincere). There is absolutely no reason for me to think this, but what I thought was, “Do you know where Wales is?” No reason not to know, but some people don’t know where Kansas is, so… I thought it was weird that that was what I thought, so I am reporting it.

Anyway, I made Axl Heck soup. It was not originally called Axl Heck soup, but it was from a restaurant called Axel’s, so it became Axel soup, then it was only a short jump to Axl Heck soup. Axl Heck is from the TV show The Middle. If you’ve never seen it, you can assuredly find it somewhere and it’s good. Especially when Brick was dressed as corn. But I digress (surprise!). (Do you give recipes new names after they become regular stuff you eat, like Potato Yuck, or Orange Dump, or CwBCS? I do.) (I don’t actually make Potato Yuck – for obvious reasons – but I named it and people who do make it call it Potato Yuck.)

I made Axl Heck soup and it takes a while to cut up all those vegetables and simmer and all. I simultaneously boiled chicken bones for chicken juice, or stock, or whatever you get when you boil chickens. Lots of liquid was simmering and I was all chef-y. (These simmered liquids did not go together. The chicken juice is for peppered creamed chicken that I invented.) The goal of the soup was to share some with our lovely friend who had a knee replacement 10 days ago. I know. Ten days later is not the optimum time to bring a meal to someone, but I didn’t seem to be completely functional until … well, until today. We delivered the soup and some other bits for a hopefully nice lunch for them tomorrow….because it took until after dinner time to get it done and to them. Okay, I am partially functioning today.

When we stepped outside their house, the sky was beautiful. I took a picture that did not do it justice and am sharing it with you. Imagine more better. Ah. There it is.

My copy of the recipe for that delightfully yummy hamburger and potato casserole has written on the top, in my mother’s handwriting, “Potato Yuk!” Priceless.
