I learned a new word today! Historicity means historical authenticity, as in “to discuss the historicity of miracles…”. I was reading about Ralph Waldo Emerson (simply referred to as Waldo in our discussions, because why not?) with an 11th grade student and I read historicity out loud and stopped. I looked at him and said, “Well, that is a new word for me.” He agreed and immediately looked it up – to see if it was a real word. Indeed it is. I was very excited to learn such as awesome new word and it showed. He said, “You are really excited about this, aren’t you?” I said, “Yes! How great of a word is that? It’s a sort of portmanteau, isn’t it? I love it.” He got on board. “If you are that excited, I am excited, too.” He went walking around to share the new word.
The POTD is my social studies classroom. I would like to report that 5th hour was very quiet yesterday while taking notes, and buckled down and did the assignment today. They ALL finished – early! We had 11 extra minutes (roughly equivalent to 100 years) …which turned into 11 very long minutes of them pushing, shoving, and hitting each other. Apparently, there is a “really fun” game where you hold hands and then take turns slapping the coupled hands as hard as possible. I will be VERY diligent from now on to make sure we do not ever get done early again.
What a great day for me. I learned TWO new words: historicity and portmanteau!
Alexander is king of the portmanteau, so he taught me that word long ago
