Keith writing tonight since Barbara’s feeling poorly…
Today in summary: we bought a duck, rode in the car on a ferry (twice), ate classic diner food, then played a game that left us pretty silly.
Now a little more info. First off, Barbara’s OK, but had a nagging upset stomach much of the day, so she’s resting now.
Yes, we bought a duck. It wasn’t living and wasn’t food. It was some very nice yard art to go by the pool at home made of stone and metal. It’s very heavy and very cool.
We (all four of us and the car) took the ferry to Madeline Island, off the northern shore of Bayfield in Lake Superior. We drove all over the island looking at the sights, which was primarily beautiful fall foliage on the trees and great views of the lake. One interesting sight is Tom’s Burned Down Cafe, which is literally a mostly burned down restaurant that is now open air and still serving food and drinks. Apparently Tom has a good sense of humor.
The PotD is in (or maybe just near) Big Bay State Park, which I’m sure it’s lovely any time of the year, but is especially nice now with the fall colors (although a bit chilly).
We ferried back (just as fun the second time) and dinner tonight was classic diner food (hot roast beef sandwiches with mashed potatoes and gravy for the others and meatloaf for me) at a place called Greunke’s that’s mostly just fun to say. The homemade apple pie for dessert was the highlight.
After that it was back to the inn for hours of laughter playing the (now quite dated) game Outburst. Who knew that our collective knowledge shined the most in the categories of George Washington and Star Wars?
Beautiful country holds many fond memories… especially knowing that when the lake freezes one can drive on the ice to Madeline Island. After the holidays, Christmas trees define the ‘road’ and when the ice melts in the spring the trees go into the lake.
Hope you feel better soon Barbara.
