The first week was hot and we couldn’t figure out how to get the glass onto the stick and out of the fire.
The second week we tried to make cylinders that turned out like marshmallows, and I didn’t even get a turn because we were so slow and confused.
Tonight, Claire said we were going to make a group sculpture, then each make our own thing. Um. Claire, do you know who we are? We are the new people.
Then we all did little bits and made a pufferfish.
Alexander could not stop smiling.
Then Keith made a turtle, whoops, nope, a duck. Something went a little wonky when he tried to make the shell and we all said, hey, it looks like a duck. So, it became a duck. I made a hedgehog. Alexander made a crab.
Did you read that? We MADE stuff. Out of glass. That we got on the end of a stick out of the fire. Phew. We are amazing.
Can’t wait for next week!
Not surprising that Alexander looks so comfortable, like he’s been doing this for ages.
SO agree!
When do we get to see the finished projects?
Our creations go in the annealer after being made. It is a 950degrees when we put them in, then it slowly decreases the temperature over 3ish days, so they don’t crack from thermal shock. We will see them next week – and then there will definitely be pictures. They are NOT gorgeous – as one of our co-students said, “The are things only a mother could love” 🙂 – but they were pretty exciting to make. Let’s face it – getting the glass out of the furnace (without setting yourself on fire) is still really exciting!
You three are awesome! Looking forward to more.
I am quite excited to find out what we will do next week!
I’m looking forward to seeing the crab and the hedgehog, and I’m really excited to see the turtle-duck. 🐢🐥 Talk about creative–collectively, you came up with two animals and a whole new species!
My creativity extended as far as staring at Alexander for quite a while – whispering “what should I make?” Keith’s duck turtle was the first attempt by our trio. Hard act to follow
