Lake Wobegon

Keith was up and gone when I woke up this morning. He was playing the flute part of a cantata at a church, as well as lots of other music during the service. Since he was playing a B-flat flugelhorn and flute music is in C, he had to transpose down a seventh – or up a step and down an octave. Stuff like that hurts my brain. He said it was a bit of a challenge reading all the ledger lines above the staff (where flute music likes to live) while transposing. I pointed out that no one asked me to just play it on the flute.

I started the day tutoring a friend’s 8th grade grandson in Algebra. I’m hoping it helps – he’s got skills, just needs a little help getting motivated and understanding how to use the math once it is figured out. Simple, right?

We went to the Lake Wobegon Brass Band’s Christmas concert this afternoon. They always put on a good show. They also always support Toys for Tots and there were a lot of toys around the theater and in the lobby. Their soprano cornet player is retiring after over 20 years with the band. They have asked Keith to play their next concert (March 1, 7, 8). He may be asked to stay on after that – exciting.

Jerry and Barbara sent a picture for shopping yesterday, but somehow, we didn’t get it. I have to include it today, because it is terrific (especially if you know their last name is Young).

It’s time for our holly, jolly participation in the POTD! The theme of day nine is movies! Send me a picture of or inspired by movies – text or email – or [email protected] by 10pm December 9 and it will be in that day’s blog. If you want to remain anonymous, let me know – otherwise I will give you credit. You don’t have to play every day – any day or every day is fine! We will count down the days to Christmas together!

Today’s music pictures are from Kristine, Jerry, Donna, Benjamin, Keith, and me

And suddenly there was with the angel, a multitude…
Sean recreating the music from her concert today.
Flute music for flugelhorn–down a minor seventh. Huh. And Keith’s new book for LWBB.
Our friend, Gary, played with Keith this morning, played with Wobegon in the afternoon, then ducked out before the encore to get to his next gig (and then the one after that). He is the epitome of music today!

  1. Two things…. 1) Sean – I don’t get it… What size mouthpiece does that thing take, and where does it go? 🙂 and 2) Gary is looking great!!!

    1. Haha, I dropped a mouthpiece into the big hole in the center and it’s definitely helped my tone quality! 😜

      1. Try a Schilke 51D and see if it’s not even better – if that doesn’t work, maybe a Bach 7c…. (I had NO IDEA that you were having fun with guitar!!! Hope to get to hear you play sometime!)
