We went to see The Life of Pi tonight, part of the touring Broadway series.
Wow.
Just wow. The actor playing Pi himself was incredible – what a fine, fine performance. The puppets were straight up amazing. It was really easy to forget that Richard Parker was not a real tiger. The animal sounds seemed like they had to be recordings of actual animals, not the puppeteers using their voices.
They had fantastic special effects making it look like he was in a boat in the water, in storms and in sunshine. The swift changes in set from present to past were so wonderfully done it seemed like the ocean drained away in seconds. Whoever figured all of that out is brilliant.
I did not remember the story, so I was on the edge of my seat (which is kind of hard at the Orpheum, because there is very little leg room).
