Not a Ham Sammich

Saturday, October 1, 2022

I got the last ham sandwich. I was so happy, and I wasn’t even hungry.

I suppose I need to back up. Last night we packed more clothes than we will need (I was worried I would be cold) (if you know me, you know that is ridiculous. I am not cold)  (if you don’t know me, how funny! Welcome to my blog), and got ready for our cruise. Alexander came about 10:30, so he would be at our house to be our airport Uber and I wouldn’t have to worry about him arriving – and I thought it would give him 20 minutes extra sleep before our 5:15am departure. His phone was playing a jaunty sea shanty as he came up the stairs. He was extra dapper with a plaid scarf around his shoulders – made even more fun when I realized it was his pajamas. Alexander enjoys a sea shanty and has a collection of them. He contends this is normal and average. I say it is charming and unique. Either way, the shanty lyrics mentioned “going to St John” and we are going to St John! Theme music for the win.

Tom and Louise arrived this morning, excited for their first cruise. I am over the moon excited that they are joining us. We zipped through TSA pre check and stopped for an egg-a-muffin. Louise reads the blog – she immediately told Keith to check the bag to make sure it was there, and it was an egg-a-muffin. Win!!

We walked just a few steps and a cart man stopped and offered us a ride, presumably because Louise is using a cane. Yes, thank you. Gate C13 was very far away! We had no idea. Zoooooom ( you are going a lot faster than you look when you watch people get chauffeured around).

We arrived at the gate and the first thing I saw was a monitor with my name listed #1 for an upgrade. We already got upgraded yesterday to comfort plus. A few minutes later, our Delta apps lit up with pretty pink first class boarding passes. I went right up and thanked the gate agent. Whoooohooooo!

First class on our little plane only has one seat, aisle, two seats in first class. Win. I don’t even have to share an armrest.

Our flight attendant took our breakfast order and there was a ham sammich, something I didn’t understand (but whole grain was in it), or curry salad something. Ham sammich! The next people were not offered a sandwich, so I won.

Then she came back and said, whoops, that wasn’t breakfast. I got the charcuterie and cheese. I love nibbling, so fabulous. I ate the nuts and olives, now I will offer Keith the prosciutto and fancy cheese and fig spread.

The captain said we will feel the effects of Hurricane Ian during our landing, but he has extra fuel in case we have to circle. Okay. I’m hoping that Ian part is wrong.

********

Oh look! Time passed. Now I am sitting at the buffet looking at the Brooklyn bridge, and I just snapped the potd by turning left. Tom and Louise are excited to be on a boat way bigger than they thought.

The flight landed way smoother than expected. Win! We got our suitcase quickly, then waited for the shuttle. And waited. Then called Princess. Then waited. After the shuttle was close to an hour late, someone else waiting called and got a lady that told us the shuttle wasn’t coming. And we should take a taxi.

What now?

Keith just ordered up an Uber XL and in about 6 minutes we were on our way to Brooklyn. Wow. Even with a generous tip, it was cheaper than the shuttle, so there.

I will post this now, because we will sail soon and have no connection to the outside world. I will write each day, and post when I can.

  1. Back up here a minute Barbara …. Where are you going on your cruise? I don’t remember reading about it.
Have a wonderful time. Looking forward to hearing about your adventures. 🙂🙂

    1. We are in New York City. Supposed to be Newport Rhode Island, Boston, Bar Harbor, Maine, St John, New Brunswick, and Halifax, Nova Scotia. It was a last minute vacation planned after the Alaska trip got postponed

  2. Bon voyage! I know you won’t see this for a while, but it’s not time sensitive and I didn’t want to forget: Have you and Alexander seen the movie Fisherman’s Friends? It’s about a group of Cornish fishermen who sing sea shanties, and a guy who wants to record them. It’s delightful.
