I am done with school for the summer! Woooo. I ended up showing the first 40 minutes of Hidden Figures five times today. The kids were terrific and just watched the movie. Their teacher left a “study guide” – a list of simple questions designed to keep them attentive. First hour worried about the questions (I didn’t get number 6 – it’s okay, we’re only on number 4. How do you spell segregation? etc) and were not focused on the film itself. From second hour on, I started class by telling them the answers to the questions. You could have heard a pin drop. They all agreed they watch better when they don’t have to think about the questions. And they did. They cleared off their desks and just watched. It was kinda greatest.
We’ve been having an issue with the dishwasher in our new house. The lower rack falls off the track – sometimes during the cycle – stopping the spinny washy arm on the bottom. It is really hard to roll the dishes in and the dishes out. Keith internetted it and learned that it is a design flaw and that you need to order new wheels. They came yesterday and didn’t fix. Internet said if they don’t work, you should get these instead. They came today and it is FIXED! Yay. My question is how did the previous people deal with this for the entire time they had this dishwasher (over ten years)? Also, how did they have a single towel bar in the master bathroom? And what is the deal with the dribbly water pressure in the kitchen sink? Anyway, happy dish rolling to us!!
We went to opening night of Significant Other at Lyric Arts. Wow wow wow. The main character never left the stage. He was absolutely terrific. The story was about 4 college friends, now in the their late 20s, moving on with their lives and finding their significant others. Three women and a gay man imagine their futures and then find their futures. The man, Jordan, is there for the woman, but really wonders if he will ever be someone’s significant other. It was hilarious (LOL!) and poignant and so thought-provoking. The staging was so cool. As scenes changed Jordan moved from one side of the stage to the other seamlessly, ending one and starting another – often times with a sentence starting one way and changing in the middle to start the new scene. It was so cool.
As the show started, I had a momentary thought about the number of people who have comment to us lately about how many shows we see and about how many tickets we just bought, and I was filled with appreciation for how lucky we are. We both like to go, so we don’t have to find a companion and we have seen so many great performances done by local talented people. I love musicals, but plays are really the best. I am so lucky to be able to see so many.
