Sweet Sixteens

Today was a planned day at sea. We got 16 at trivia and WON! Actually, we tied but won the tie breaker. (How many years between Jackie and John Kennedy? I knew it was more than you think, so our 8 beat 3 and 5.)

Simon suggested we go late to the culinary demonstration that had started at the same time as trivia. We watched the end for 5 minutes, then we were very near the front of the line to walk through the kitchen (because we were standing in the back of the theater.) Win! None of us had been before and it was very interesting. I have been told repeatedly that there isn’t much to see – that it was smaller than you’d expect. Huh. I thought it was HUGE and there was tons to see. They frequently say they make 10,000 meals each day, which makes sense – even though we are on the second smallest Princess ship. They have a food and beverage staff of 450.

We had lunch at the buffet for the first time this trip (we’ve been doing breakfast and dinner only). We were like kids zooming around checking out all the new choices. Mmmm. We shared a LOT of chocolate for dessert.

We promenaded for a while. Lots of winter type jackets were out and about (perhaps because it was cloudy. Oooo cloudy). I was the only one with a sleeveless dress on. It was 68°. I was not being tough. Keith wanted a nap and I read my book. Generally, I’d prefer to just look at water on a boat, because I can and do read at home, but it was pretty perfect today.

For afternoon trivia, James from Racine joined us. We got 15! or did we? The first question we got wrong (or did we?) What is the primary color of toilet paper in France? We put white, but the given answer was pink. James lived there for 4 years, Simon and Keith have spent dozens of weeks there, and no one has ever seen pink toilet paper. We marked it wrong, but…The POTD is (left to right) Simon, Keith, Keith, James, and me. The Sweet 16s!

We talked with James for an hour after Simon and Keith went for a cuppa. He has traveled quite a bit and it is so interesting to hear about adventures taken. It was Mexican night at the buffet. I went back to create nachos while Keith was finishing his plate, and when I came back, he had an ice cream cone. A roving cart of ice cream came by while I was gone. Nothing like a cone mid-meal!

We came down in the elevator alone – we are ALWAYS alone – and I took our picture. I never know where to look. Keith didn’t used to know where to look. It was funnier when he was lost. I like this small ship not so full of people. I will look for Island Princess again.

We went to a new game show tonight called the Sky’s the Limit. Teams of two competed against each other. One person had to say how many of something the other person could name of something in 30 seconds. It was very funny to see the Nicaraguan cruise director trying to name 18 US states in 30 seconds. He got 19 – so woohoo! We stayed to play Tricky Twisted Trivia at 10:30 and Simon and Keith came to join us. They were visuals that we had to figure out what they meant and what the covered-up sign would say and things like that. Simon had one right that we went a different way with, and we were so glad, because then ….we got 16! Sixteen was good enough for a win, so now we have a lot of coasters that say Island Princess.

We have one more day onboard, so we started packing. How does the time go so fast? So, so, so many people are on this ship for multiple back-to-back 10-day cruises (there are three in a row) and then an 18-day repositioning cruise to Florida. Simon and Keith are on for another ten and think we should stay to play trivia with them. I talked to people who won’t get home until Dec 22…Wow!

Our room refrigerator has been broken the whole trip. The only thing we have in it is the soda they gave us for my elite status. We asked for an ice bucket and so we have used ice in the glass for our drinks. Two days ago, it occurred to me to put a soda in the ice bucket overnight, and even as the ice melted, it would cool the soda. Today, Josiah, our cabin steward, got us a MUCH bigger bucket of ice. 🙂

The view from the window this morning:

Good thing we weren’t trying to dock anywhere. It was really rolling. I like when you sort of bounce back and forth when you walk down the halls. By afternoon, it had calmed down.
