The Stars are Bright!

We are in Texas! San Antonio, to be more precise. Texas is big, afterall. I have had wine, so I am typing very carefully.

Our friend, Dave, nicely drove us to the airport. We bounced in the plane the whole time. It would have been very scary, but I decided to just reaaalllly focus on the movie and not on dying in a plane crash. It worked out well. We watched John Wick, because we’d never seen it and it came up on the new-to-the-plane list. A really lot of people got shot in that movie. Then we watched most of The Mitchells v the Machines – an animated comedy. Two very different choices. The woman in the row ahead of us had access to two windows and kept them both open the entire trip. Who does that? Did she not notice she was the only one in the plane with window shades up? I was irritated, but figured she had her right to sunny times even if it made my screen really hard to see.

As we walked to find the shuttle to our hotel, we saw Glinda and Dorothy. I always really wanted a Glinda costume. That hat is sooooo great. I told Glinda that she was living my 10 year-old self’s dream, but it really is still now. They dressed up to pick people up from the airport. I asked if the people were from Kansas – so they could say I don’t think we are in Kansas anymore – but they weren’t. I did not understand at all why they were dressed as Wizard of Oz characters, but it was great. They were quite happy to pose for a picture. They seemed surprised. I would think everyone would want to take my picture if I was dressed as Glinda (but I have had wine. I am thinking a lot of things).

Our hotel (Drury Plaza airport) offers free snack and drinks from 5:30-7 every night. We don’t know if we will be here during that time on our next evenings, so we decided to see if it worked out for dinner or was really just some chips. Tonight’s choices included baked potatoes, BBQ pulled pork, veg, salad, soup, hot dogs, popcorn, chips, cheese and salsa. Keith was halfway through his first plateful and said, “It’s working out.” He tasted everything and I had potatoes. Three baked potatoes. And I brought a bag of popcorn back to the room, for later emergency eating, if necessary. We also could have gotten three drinks. Keith had a Cuba Libre – rum, coke, lime. He said it was good. I had Pink Moscato. I looked it up to see what it was. It said it was sweet, so I got it. It was like drinking candy. My kind of drink. I have a second one for later, in the refrigerator. I would not have been able to navigate back to the room if I’d had both. Three is definitely out of my wheelhouse. Keith had the pink wine after his drink drink. He did not seem to have any trouble walking, or not giggling. It was interesting to me that most of the many people there were drinking soda instead of drinky drinks. We are not in Wisconsin anymore.

Our room overlooks the pool. I didn’t go swimming before dinner, because I didn’t want to cut the swimming short or miss dinner. Now I would drown. And that is bad.

Tomorrow we will remember the Alamo!

  1. Okie dokie! Now we know!!! The Alamo is pretty fun. We enjoyed going through all the buildings on the property – just interesting stuff here, there, and yon. Other things we really liked seeing – the missions. There are several and each is a little different. Also, the botanical gardens are really nice! It’s definitely a mostly outdoor type thing, but they sure have done a nice job. I can’t remember where the central market is, but that’s a ton o’ fun, and there are good Mexican eats there. Sailing down the River Walk looked like fun. We went there and ate food – there is much good food – hard to pick where to eat. In the meantime, don’t click your heels together three times – you could find yourself back in Minnesota unexpectedly….

    1. We do plan to go to the Missions, and I will take a look at the botanical gardens! I will be careful not to click my heels, because you know, there is no place like home 🙂

  2. I don’t remember the name of the Mexican restaurant we ate at in the Mercado (I think that’s the central market) , but it has an amazing bakery case. We settled for just a couple of things, but looking back, I think we could have managed one of everything. Notice how I went right for the food in my San Antonio memory. No doubt that’s why they say travel is broadening . . .
