Happy Valentine’s day!
We went to see the play To Kill a Mockingbird and it was terrific. I realize my theater reviews just consist of me raving by giving non-specific words like terrific, but there you go. It was three hours long and went by in a flash. Considering I’ve read the book multiple times and knew everything that was going to happen, I didn’t expect to be as spellbound as I was. The sets were cool – I SO wanted to take a picture during one of the courtroom scenes for our picture of the day. Scout and Jem and Dill moved around the stage narrating. The actors were much older than the characters they were portraying, but it did not matter at all. Scout talks at the end about never seeing Dill again, and I thought about that as we were driving home. It makes complete sense in the 1930s that a child would leave an area and be lost to their friends forever. Now we are so connected to so many people it’s hard to have time for the connections.
Richard Thomas was Atticus. He was a good as you would expect him to be. We saw him years ago when he played Henry Fonda’s role in Twelve Angry Men. I didn’t realize he was in this show until we got there. We had gotten an email saying that we needed to be early – that the show would start ON TIME, and late patrons would not be seated for 23 minutes. We left very early, drove through the pouring rain, and were very early. We always come in through the skyway – straight from the parking ramp level to the skyway directly into the second floor where our balcony seats are. Since we were early, I wanted to go downstairs and look at merchandise. The merchandise booth was sadly before you had your ticket scanned, so we would have had to go out into the lobby and then wait in line to get back in. That seemed silly, so we didn’t go out. I did take the POTD and find out that Richard Thomas was starring and Aaron Sorkin had written this adaptation of the show.
Now that I loved the show so much, I wish I had a T-shirt. Well. Maybe I do. I didn’t actually get to see them. Maybe they were ugly. I will assume they were ugly and so very expensive.
