We were driving across Minneapolis to get to Theater Latte Da tonight, thinking about public art. I saw a couple things that started my thinking, then just a few blocks short of the theater, I saw this giant rock sculpture next to a small store, on the edge of their parking lot. I was intrigued enough to walk back after we parked to look at it.
How did it come to be? Something that big and heavy didn’t just get made willy-nilly, and it didn’t end up on the edge of a parking lot without a plan. There was no sign or information anywhere to be found, so we just looked at it for a while and let it be. Hello big, heavy rock art. Bye big, heavy rock art.
This My Antonia was a world premiere of a musical version of the story. I’ve never read the book, but we did see a nonmusical version of it many years ago. It was terrific. The songs were really good. The set was so simple and very cool. The acting was terrific. The best part were the two young people who played young Antonia and young Jimmy. Wow. Just wow.
