Surprised Me

I went to work at Woodbury Middle School today for my friend, Jody. WMS has been under construction for the summer, and I was very interested in the changes. The POTD is the front office. It is actually a picture of my friend, Betsy, who has a new office job there, taking care of the money! Since schools generally don’t have any money, I am unsure how she will fill her time. Actually, she also has to do attendance – a seriously laborious and painstaking and important thing in a middle school. I really enjoyed knowing she was going to be on the other end of the line when I called in my attendance today. Yay, Betsy! (She is behind the pillar, hiding from the camera) (Use X-ray vision. She had a cute dress with stripes) All of the changes to the building look really nice.

I was in a high needs program today, which is really different than a regular classroom, because everyone has lots of individual needs and schedules. There are an awesome number of wonderful paraprofessionals, nurses, OTs, PTs, DAPE teachers, and speech/language therapists in and out throughout the day.

I loved it. I was surprised I wasn’t tired. I was surprised how happy I was to be at work. I didn’t expect it.

After work I was looking at my phone when Keith said, “You remember we have a show tonight, right?” No. No, I did not. I thought it was next week. Turns out we do have one next Thursday, but a different one from tonight. I was not delighted with the news. I have been glad we haven’t had much to do in the evenings. I thought maybe I was done going to shows.

We went to see Fancy Dancer at the MN History Theater. It was a one woman show written by Larissa Fasthorse. She is half Lakota and half white, raised by adoptive white parents, who (despite physical handicaps) wanted to become a ballerina. It was not an easy path, but very interesting and very well done. I really enjoyed it; I was so glad that we were there. I guess I’m not done with shows. Another surprise for the day. We joined friend, Carla, and her two friends. We all agreed she couldn’t be the 55 years old that her bio said she was. Maybe 40. Of course, people probably say the same thing about me.
