Two very different movies

At 3:02pm I said to Keith, “If we go to the 3:20 movie of Elio, we will have the theater to ourselves.” We dithered briefly, then went. We were in row 2 and two other people ended up in the backrow (row 5). It was a cartoon movie (as opposed to an animated feature). There wasn’t really anything particularly clever or surprising, but there were sweet characters and it was nice.

After the movie, Tom and Louise invited us over for a backyard movie. It was a beautiful cool evening – sparkling with fireflies. I have a scratch off poster of 100 best movies. Last Christmas Benjamin got me DVDs of all the movies I do not have scratched off. Louise encouraged us to choose from that pile for tonight’s movie. We chose The French Connection. We all enjoyed it very much. It was best picture of 1971 and we had to think about that. Movies have changed a lot in 54 years, so it is interesting what was best then. Gene Hackman and Roy Scheider were good (last backyard movie was JAWS, so it is the summer of Scheider!), but I wondered what made Popeye Doyle famous and remembered all this time. We all recognized his hat – but we all thought perhaps he shouldn’t wear such a noticeable hat while he is tailing someone. Didn’t seem like prime policework.
