Halloween, South Carolina

Thursday, October 1, 2026

The day started with at least three people up to see the sunrise. I was not one of them. This is Nancy’s version of three nearly identical choices.

Today was a pool day instead of a beach day. There was walking around the beach, but we got wet in the pool. The infinity part of the pool gave us a terrific place to lean on nice soft tile instead of concrete.

Nancy went to her high school reunion a few weeks ago and chatted with someone who lives in Myrtle Beach. She mentioned we needed to go to Conway to see their Halloween decorations. Today was the first day (Happy October!), so we drove the 35 minutes (50 because of traffic) to see. From October 1-31, the town actually changes its name to Halloween!

We parked in a park and ride, which made things very simple. A van, driver, and assistant driver were there to pick us up.

There were couches!

There was a terrifying clown section of town

Keith had a hot dog with jalapeno, sriracha, chipotle mayo, pico de gallo, and onions. He wished he had six. Donna and Nancy tracked down popcorn once they smelled it.

While we waited for the parade, I watched this kid riding a dinosaur be the belle of the ball. The kids passing by were very confused by the inflatable costume. This little boy very kindly asked, “Can I pet your dinosaur?” He did so – verrrry cautiously.

There was a costume parade and the downtown was filled up with watchers. What fun!

We love a homemade costume, so the frog head, Godzilla, and the UFO were favorites of ours. I saw the UFO run into an astronaut later in the evening. Perfect.

Ghoul Vibrations, the band, were playing to a packed audience after the parade. Definitely a very high point to the evening.

So many decorations, everywhere.

Every tree in the downtown was decorated with pumpkins and lights. It was wonderful.

These people are wondering what to do next. They are very organized about it.

To finish the evening in style, we went to Friendly’s! Nancy had a cold and needed some real food, so she had (lousy) chicken soup and a delicious patty melt. Donna and I shared a The Hunka Chunka PB Lava Cake. Everything tasted great, except we didn’t get any peanut butter topping or hot fudge. The maker said she put it on, but she didn’t. I mean, we would have noticed it, right? Our waitress, Marion, brought us little cups of both and then we were riding high! That peanut butter sauce is just the reason to go to Friendly’s!

  1. Does everybody in that town get the day off on Wednesday??? WOW!!! And the trip to Friendly’s reminds me – today is MOOMER’S DAY. And we will observe it again a week from this very day…. Just sayin’…..

We saw a lot of different license plates in the lot – people might be coming from near and far.
I would not mind another round at Friendly’s in honor of Moomer’s day….
