We went to see You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown at Artistry theater tonight. EB’s mom couldn’t make it, so we invited Louise and it was a grand outing. Thanks to Keith for driving so we could all chat about all the things. The show was very good. I really liked the actor playing Charlie Brown – as he walked out, I said so, and Keith asked, “Do you know why you liked him so much?” I said, “Because he looked like my Uncle Fred.” He responded, “Because he looks like your Uncle Fred.” We looked up when the show was from – 1967. Keith thought perhaps this was a reprise of the original cast. I think that was a brilliant casting choice – all of these Peanuts were seasoned players.
None of the rest of the group had seen the show before, but I was pretty sure Donna was in it in elementary school. I really did not remember anything about the show, except that none of the kids in the show looked anything like comic strip characters. They were not 2D. Charlie Brown just had hair like any kid. I could NOT understand how any of that made any sense. My sister was the dog. I told EB. She said, “You mean Snoopy.” Apparently, yes, since the dog is Snoopy. Snoopy is the dog. Snoopy is famous. I had a Snoopy bank. (Was it Snoopy? Yes. I think. Or it was just a dog. No, had to be Snoopy…)
So when we got home, I had to watch the fourth game of the national division championship – and the Brewers won! Four straight against the Dodgers!! Whooop whooop! I texted Donna, because she is a big Brewers fan and I knew she was having happy. We texted about how hard sports watching is, etc. I asked her if she was actually in Charlie Brown or was I imagining things. She did not write back yes or no. She wrote back “I was the dog.”
I could not stop laughing. I think there was post-sports stress relief in that laughing, but also WHY DO WE SAY THAT? She was the dog.
She was in third grade. Wait a second. I have to figure out what year that was. That seems pretty cutting edge if it came out in 1967. It would have been 1972/73. That is a pretty new show to be trickling down to elementary school in just 5 years. Huh.
It is good production, as Artistry tends to have, and I recommend it. Go ahead and see it!
