Wrong Kid

We went to Lyric Arts tonight to see the musical Merrily We Roll Along. I saw that the kid I liked so much in the Music Man (I asked for his autograph) was playing the main character’s son. Uh oh! Double cast for the kid. When he finally showed up halfway through act 1, it was the wrong kid. This kid was a little whispery and slow on his lines. My kid would not have been like that. He is a star. If I wasn’t going out of town for most of the rest of the run, I’d probably have to go again just to see my kid (and he is in it verrrry little).

It was a very interesting show. It goes backwards in time for the whole show. It starts with a celebration party (or is it?) and introduces our three main players. The next scene is set a few years earlier, then a few more years earlier, and so on and so on, until you see how they met and everything started. I liked that a lot. I guess I have always liked that premise in books – as characters fill out as you learn their backstory. It’s why I liked the TV show LOST so much. It started with a plane crash and you met everyone on the beach, then each episode you met a character and learned some of why they were on the plane. I loved that so much. So, this was like that, sort of. Cool beans.
